Marlene McConnell holds a BProc and LLB degree from the University of the Western Cape, and an LLM from the University of Cape Town. She is also an admitted attorney of the High Court.
Marlene has a wealth of experience spanning more than a decade as a company secretary in the listed company environment. She has, throughout her career, served on a number of boards as representative, trustee and non-executive director, where she primarily focused on overseeing portfolios related to corporate governance, legal compliance, sustainability, and industry matters. In her non-executive roles, she has contributed to strategic matters, checked performance against set targets and set the tone for an integrated culture that is focused on adding value for all stakeholders. In her role as trustee, she has gained exposure and contributed to the overall strategy and policies as they relate to the funding, investing and disbursement of funds.
On an operational level she participated in board, executive and other management meetings, where she was exposed to strategy and tactical implementation in respect of all business disciplines. These include operations, merchandising, marketing, information technology, finance, human resources, and insurance. She managed the implementation of corporate governance strategies in all areas of the business. Furthermore, she took part in all legislative developments and legal notices by the company. With respect to legislative developments, she identified, summarised, and communicated various pieces of legislation using a variety of media. This was implemented through the development of various procedures and policies to ensure compliance by means of an audit process. She actively pursued board matters with proper care, loyalty and integrity.
